The listeria outbreak from cantaloupe has seen an increase in deaths and illnesses. The Center of Disease Control has reported 18 deaths and 100 illnesses across 20 states in the nation.
The two additional deaths have occurred in Kansas and Colorado. Other states where deaths have occurred include Texas, New Mexico, Maryland, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
The CDC is concerned that even more deaths are going to be associated with the outbreak because the symptoms can take up to two months to be seen. This is the deadliest outbreak that has occurred in the U.S. in over a decade. The FDA is still investigating the cause of the outbreak at this time and are looking into the water supply at Jensen Farms, where the defective cantaloupes were grown.
