Here at The Pottenger Law Firm, we’re big fans of free legal consultations. Why? Because they’re like test-driving a car—except instead of kicking the tires, you get to ask a real lawyer questions about your actual legal problem without spending a dime. It’s the perfect opportunity to get direction, determine if your case has legs, and figure out whether we’re the legal team you want riding shotgun.

But like most things in life (filing your taxes, assembling IKEA furniture, surviving a family group chat), a little preparation goes a long way. So, if you want to make the most out of your free legal consultation, here’s our not-so-secret lawyer-approved guide.

Step 1: Know What You Want (Or At Least Pretend You Do)

Before you show up at our office (or log into a Zoom call in your pajama bottoms—no judgment), it’s helpful to have a general idea of why you’re seeking legal help.

Are you hoping to sue someone? Hoping to avoid being sued? Want to understand a legal process that’s already in motion, or figure out what your rights are after an accident or a workplace injury?

Even if you’re not 100% sure, having a rough goal helps us give you the best advice in the time we have. Think of it like heading into a doctor’s office—you don’t need to know the diagnosis, but it helps if you can tell us where it hurts.

And while you’re at it, jot down a few notes:

  • A timeline of events with dates (we lawyers love dates)
  • Questions you want answered (big or small)
  • Contact info for witnesses
  • Any communication you’ve had with the other side—texts, emails, smoke signals, whatever.

Trust us, showing up with something beats staring at the ceiling trying to remember what day your accident happened.

Step 2: Bring the Receipts (Literally)

Evidence. We love it. We need it. We can’t get enough of it.

The more documentation you bring, the better equipped we’ll be to give you solid legal advice. If you were injured—say, in a car accident, at work, or thanks to someone else’s negligence—this stuff is pure gold:

  • Photos of injuries, vehicles, damaged property, or the scene of the incident
  • Medical records—appointments, diagnoses, prescriptions, the whole shebang
  • Police reports, contracts, receipts, employment records, emails, and anything else that screams “evidence!”

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything yet. That’s part of what we’ll talk about. We can tell you what’s missing, what’s worth getting, and how to go about getting it. Oh, and pro tip: make copies of important documents in case we need to hang on to them.

Step 3: Ask Questions (No, Really—Ask Them All)

Look, this is your chance to interrogate us. Yes, we’re technically the professionals here, but you’re allowed to get nosy. In fact, we encourage it.

Not sure where to start? Here are a few lawyer-favorite questions to bring:

  • What kind of experience do you have with cases like mine?
  • What are my legal options?
  • How long could this take?
  • What’s the likely outcome?
  • What are your fees, and how does payment work?
  • How will you communicate with me throughout the case?

And if we start talking like we swallowed a law dictionary, please—stop us and ask for a translation. We’re fluent in “Legalese,” but we’re happy to switch to English.

Step 4: Be Honest, Even If It’s Embarrassing

Consultations are confidential. That means you can (and should) tell us everything—even the parts that might not paint you in the best light. We’re not here to judge you. We’re here to help you. And we can’t do that if we’re working with half the story.

Think of it this way: if there’s a skeleton in the closet, we’d rather know about it now than have it leap out during the trial and start doing the cha-cha in front of the jury.

Step 5: Understand What Comes Next

Once we’ve gone through your story, your documents, and your questions, we’ll outline the possible next steps. Sometimes that means we tell you that yes, you have a strong case, and here’s how we proceed. Other times, it might mean you need more information, or that legal action isn’t worth the cost and hassle.

(And occasionally, it means you need a different kind of lawyer—like a family law attorney, or a criminal defense specialist. We’ll point you in the right direction. We don’t gatekeep.)

Step 6: Follow Up—and Don’t Ghost Us

If you decide to move forward with us (yay!), we’ll talk about representation, timelines, and what to expect. But even if you don’t, following up with documents or clarifying questions can help us help you.

And please—don’t disappear. If you change your phone number, move, or accidentally drop your phone in a lake, let us know. We don’t have a crystal ball, and ghosting your lawyer never works out well. We’ve seen the horror stories.

So, Why Do We Offer Free Consultations Anyway?

Because we believe everyone should have access to legal advice, even if they’re not ready to commit. It’s like dating, but with less awkward small talk and more paperwork. We want you to feel informed, empowered, and confident—whether you hire us or not.
