According to a new study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, most doctors, up to 99 percent in some fields, will be sued for medical malpractice in the span of their career.
This threat may lead doctors across the country to practicing what is considered “defensive medicine.” This type of medicine means that additional tests are done in order to make sure that each patient is diagnosed correctly.
Researchers looked into data from 1991 to 2005 and determined that 99 percent of doctors in “high-risk” fields and 75 percent of doctors in “low-risk” fields face lawsuits in their career. In any given year, nearly 7.4 percent of all doctors face a lawsuit. Some officials think that this fear is leading to defensive medicine and higher health care costs.
