Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of the birth control pill Yasmin, is facing nearly 4,000 lawsuits for side effects related to the birth control pill.  The drosperinone in Yasmin, or Yaz, has been shown to be able to cause side effects such as heart attacks, gall bladder disease, strokes, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.  Some women involved in the lawsuits have had to have their gall bladders removed after developing gall bladder disease from taking the birth control drug.

In some instances, these side effects can prove to be fatal.  One woman, a freshman in college, was taking Yaz and passed away in September from blood clots.  Medical researchers are concerned that Yasmin is riskier than most other birth control pills and yet poses no additional benefits.
