Memorial Day and Labor Day mark the unofficial beginning and end of summer. The National Safety Council marks these holidays as the beginning and end of the 100 Deadliest Days of the year for teen drivers. Although summer is almost over, the threat of deadly driving accidents for both teen and adult drivers will increase leading up to Labor Day weekend.
In preparation for the holiday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently launched its annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” law enforcement crackdown on drunk driving. More than 10,000 law enforcement officials nationwide will be on the lookout for drunk drivers now through September 7, with zero tolerance for drivers caught with a BAC of 0.08 or higher.
Drunk drivers can be on the road at any time of day, but the most dangerous time is between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Nearly half of all fatalities during that time involve drunk drivers, compared to 14% during the day, according to the NHTSA.
The agency reminds motorists that the best protection against a drunk driver is a seatbelt.
